The Other Side

Posted: May 23, 2013 in HSU Saga, Media, Politics

By now you have probably heard that Craig Thomson was in court in Melbourne yesterday.

You have probably read how there were 19 new charges laid against him, and that this time his wife Zoe was not there to support him. All of these things are true, but there is more that you probably haven’t read in the main stream media.

I’ll try to fill in the gaps.

For starters the 19 new charges, you probably don’t know what they are.

The new charges are all fraud related charges and relate to spending during Thomson’s time at the HSU. A complete list of the new charges is linked below.

Craig Thomson Additional Charges

Interestingly however many of the new charges are for amounts of less than $50. This would mean that these charges actually cost more to process than the amount the charge alleges was fraudulently taken.

These new charges are clearly designed to create a media frenzy as most of the amounts are less than trivial.

I also note that many of the larger amounts are in fact combined totals of smaller amounts on bank statements.

Another way of making it look worse than it is are examples such as charge 157, which mentions a Diners Club statement totalling $2385.67, although the charge only relates to $15.95 of that. The rest is just window dressing.

Other charges such as charge number 159 for a $500 cash withdrawal are doubled up so there are two charges for the same allegation, you will note charge 160 is for the same offence.

This is seemingly designed for media consumption.

In fact, given that the evidence that these charges were based on has been in police hands for so long it would appear as if the charges are being drip fed to a hungry media with each court appearance. I wonder how many new charges will be laid next time?

If you think this is a bit far-fetched, think back to when Thomson was arrested with the dodgy police warrant at his electoral office.

You may recall the media circus, the pre-arranged media pack, the dodgy warrant, the strip search, and the 3rd bail condition. Yep, the 3rd bail condition telling Thomson that he could not associate with sex workers.

At the time the judge stated that she thought that the 3rd bail condition was highly prejudicial, seemingly designed to imply guilt, and looked like it had been created with the media in mind.

At yesterday’s court appearance, the judge refused to even read out this bail condition, after starting to read it stopping and telling Thomson to note it was there. You probably didn’t read that elsewhere…

Thomson’s wife Zoe was not at court as it would have been extra expense I’d assume, given they are doing it tough financially due to Thomson’s legal costs that would make sense. For main stream media to try and imply it is suggesting that Zoe does not support Craig is nothing short of irresponsible.

Some charges have mentioned that Thomson had watched “in-house R Rated Adult Pornographic movie” in his room, but didn’t say what they were. Maybe this be because hotels offer adult movies, not porn. Maybe it was Pulp Fiction, a classic war film like Apocalypse Now, or maybe he decided to give himself a fright with The Exorcist, there are all classed as R-Rated adult entertainment.  But that would not have the desired implication, or attract the same media attention.

Those who have read the in-house entertainment guides in hotels would be aware that hotels don’t itemise movies for customer privacy.

The media reporting in this case has been incredibly biased and selective, not just yesterday but throughout the entire case.

Whether Thomson is guilty or innocent, the press need to give the benefit of the doubt until proven guilty, I believe that is their job, otherwise they should label every page as an opinion page.

In fact, I am of the belief that if Thomson were driving down a street and a five-year old girl in a wheelchair rolled out in front of him and he crashed into a telegraph pole to avoid her, the headline would read “Thomson damages council property” and would not even mention the girl.

In other news, since my last article was posted, I have received a few queries regarding my mentioning of how close Kathy Jackson was to the Williamson’s, particularly regarding the $3000 earrings.

I should just clarify this relationship a bit better than I did.

The Williamson’s were not in any way friends with Kathy Jackson. I am of the impression that Jackson wanted to create the illusion of being a friendly figure, all the while conspiring against them in a bid to take over the NSW Branch, something she still aspires to do via her factional puppets.

Any friend of Jackson’s probably understands all too well the notion of “Friendly Fire”.

For Thomson however, it continues to come from all directions.

Thank you, Wixxy, for keeping us up-to-date with the Thomson saga. It has become a shabby & murky imbroglio. The Vic police, involved with this case, & the media are behaving despicably in this matter with the whole presumption of innocent until proven guilty definitely having been thrown overboard. It is a disgrace

  2. Margaret Bardsley says:

When will someone get real about this. They are going after Thomson and I probably think he is not 100% innocent, but why are the Jacksons being protected. Perhaps they know people in high places, it is a disgrace.

    • Marilyn says:

Yes Margaret, Kathy is engaged to the VP of FWA who was given his job by Tony Abbott.

And I note the ACT court is going to waste hundreds of thousands on Slipper over $1000 from 3 years ago as if there are no real criminals in this country.

  3. wirilda says:

Seeing how the Vic Police are so meticulous in adding these frivolous charges, is it any wonder it’s taking forever to wade through the mountains of evidence against Ms Jackson 🙂

A compliant police force drip-feeding a compliant media.

  5. Podrick says:

Quick question Wixxy. As I recall Thommo resigned/stood down as HSU National secretary around March/April 2007 when he was endorsed as the candidate Dobell and Jackson stood in as acting Nat Secretary until she was confirmed in early 2008. How come a lot of these charges relate to the period April 2007 to early 2008 when Thomson was no longer part of the HSU and Jackson was in charge??? I might be wrong about the dates, but one would assume that when you leave a position you would hand back some things like access pass, laptops and credit cards.

    • wixxy says:

Good pickup, but alas Thomson was still there in Nov 07, he started as MP late November.

The early 2008 charges are for when the statements for the alleged offences were finalised

  6. monicaswickedstepmother says:

It doesn’t appear that the police are interested in finalising the case against Craig Thomson. Surely it would make sense to continue with the existing charges first, and make the case in court. Depending on the result of the initial case, further charges could be laid later, or abandoned.

ATM, the police appear to be trying to pressure Craig Thomson to admit to some charges, using the carrot of dropping the rest. To add more charges now will just delay the case (because the defence has to come up with way to defend the new charges), and allow additional opportunity to media speculation. It certainly isn’t helping to get a conviction.

Together with the reluctance of the police to investigate Mal Brough and James Ashby, and the Jackson’s in this affair, I really wonder who is pulling the strings.

  7. DP says:

I don’t know whether Thomson is innocent guilty or what. But I stand by ‘innocent until proven guilty’ like you ( and many others) have Peter. And what the severity of the crime is! And thank God some of us still do. What I have learnt, or gain most, through all this- is watching how other people play their roles. That in itself has been an eye opener and for that I have gained a new sense of respect for some whilst gone off some others.

  8. Heather says:

I’d love to know how they get away with such presumptive material in the courts let alone the papers?

  9. Maureen says:

Thank you Wixxy. I find this whole saga such a disgrace. The Murdoch cult have been trying to destroy the Labor/Green hung parliament since 2010 and they will do anything to anyone to that end…Asbygate, Jacksonville etc

Just hope the truth comes out that Tony Abbott is trying to pull a fast one!

  10. Benny says:

The longer this goes on the more convinced I am that Thomson is innocent.

    • Marilyn says:

Even FWA have stated they are using Thomson as an example even though they are well aware that he has not broken any rules.

They are trying to make rules retrospective without wasting time on trifles like laws.

Their dumb report said over and over again – there were no rules, he broke them.

      • BillK says:

The police seem to think he has broken some rules (known as laws). That is why he is facing 173 criminal charges.

  11. David says:

Its all been said above, thanks Wixxy for the update and your forthright summary. I would just like to add a few words to the Victorian Police.

Your handling of this matter is a bloody disgrace to the oath you took. It states….’I… hereby do solemnly and sincerely and truly declare and affirm that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of (rank), with fairness, integrity, diligence and impartiality, upholding fundamental human rights and according equal respect to all individuals and their traditions and beliefs; that while I continue to hold the said office I will to the best of my skill and knowledge discharge all the duties thereof according to law.’

It is time all involved in the elongated prosecution of Craig Thomson started adhering to that oath. In particular these solemn words ” with fairness, integrity, diligence and impartiality, upholding fundamental human rights and according equal respect to all individuals and their traditions and beliefs” ..Blind Freddy can see that is not the case thus far.
The name of the Victorian Police is badly soiled in the eyes of many. With just cause.

  12. If the movie allegedly watched had not been allegedly adult rated, would it have warranted a charge?
Would the Vic police have charged him if he had watched the Lion King?

  13. Ian Bruce says:

I’m sure if Craig Thomson can get a good barrister this will get thrown out of court ….. after the election of course…… The Police have done themselves no credit in this matter, they have been quite happy to politicise themselves in this case , shameful conduct which you can only hope will also be dealt with by the court in due course …

  14. C@tmomma says:

    Wixxy,
I’m sure you are already aware of this, but just in case you were not…subsequent to your recent post about the whereabouts of Kathy Jackson, as far as her not being overseas for her wedding to Michael Lawler but instead being here, in Australia, having a little rest in a hospital for the mentally unwell, it was noted that she was seen in the audience yesterday in the Great Hall of Parliament House in Canberra, for Joe Hockey’s speech to the faithful and gullible. She must be better again?

However, excuse me for being cynical, but is it the case that if she is incarcerated in a Mental Health facility, she is unable to be charged with a crime by Police, in the same way Godwin Gretch was not?

Looks like she can ‘escape’ when she feels like it, however.

  15. clarittee says:

At one stage Thomson was suing Fairfax for slander . Richo was part of dissuading him from continuing. ( correct me peter if I am wrong). it’s a sorry tangled tale. I consider it farcical. ABETZ was verballing staff from the FWA Pyne watches who funds him trying to make him a bankrupt so he can’t sit in the parliament. That’s the same theme as mcClymont ran though trying to criticise people who would want to see someone fund a court case that is so obviously political in nature when they are broke, seems a worthy aim to me, without a journo making a big deal about it.There was a Senate inquiry into him misleading the parliament that didn’t stick. What they are trying to do is obvious Get rid of him!!! Rub him out. It’s the same with Slipper. The bast&rds should be in chains. The court should decide these things not the parliament.

  16. JB says:

As part of his defence it would be interesting to have Thomson’s lawyer call other HSU staff with credit cards to indicate how they understood the ‘rules’ around use of the card. One witness who could be subpoened is K Jackson and her credit card details submitted as evidence for her to comment on (they are already in the public domain thanks to this blog). This would show that HSU senior staff did as they bloody well pleased with HSU credit cards and that whatever Thomson was accused of was child’s play in comparison.

  17. czerni says:

i am thinking he has probably done some of the things he is accused of.
BUT – i cannot understand that no one takes more offense at the obvious waste of tax money to put SO MUCH ENERGY (+people are paid for this..) to drag this out into so many different actions from the side of the persecution, with those ‘multiple’ charges being actually just different listings of the same offense and on and on. it is completely ridiculous. the man’s political career is over. how LONG will they continue to put dirt on his family? for a bit of unproper spending ? I believe there are others that have the same, if not more ‘irregularities’ on the book.

  18. Schoolwastetech says:

    Czerni,
I agree that this prosecution is a waste of Taxpayers money. However, I beleive that the voters of dobel (I,m one of them) still have faith in our sitting member and that Craig’s political career is just coming into it’s stride.
    Go you good thing!
