The Roof Is On Fire

If you were one of the hundreds of lucky punters caught up in the traffic gridlock this morning on Victoria Rd, you know who to thank, “Billionaire Barry”. If you were one of the unlucky eight people who had to seek medical attention, three hospitalised, from smoke inhalation this morning at Marrickville, you know who to blame, “Billionaire Barry”.

Last night’s fire in Marrickville remained out of control until this morning, leaving three in hospital, and hundreds hot under the collar stuck in a traffic gridlock during peak hour on what is arguably Sydney’s busiest road. Had more fire-fighters and fire equipment been available who knows what difference would have been? But there certainly would have been a substantial one.

It is unfortunate then that the nearby Mascot station was deserted and closed.

I know that it may seem odd to some of you that the Fire Station that neighbours Australia’s busiest Domestic and International Airports would be closed at night, but that’s the way we roll in NSW with “Billionaire Barry” in charge.

Barry took the news of the peak hour traffic chaos hard….

Barry O’Farrell became Australia’s newest Billionaire last month when someone in treasury stumbled upon a Billion Dollars that Treasurer “MYOB Mike” Baird lost. “MYOB Mike” Baird clearly has the budgeting ability of a baboon, the mathematical talent of a malley bull, and the accounting ability and arithmetic skills of a complete ass, and that’s on a good day. But, Barry, while not really a billionaire, has a billion bucks to spend now, and spend it he isn’t.

The way Barry is closing down Fire Stations you would think that “MYOB Mike” had lost another Billion bucks rather than found them.

Also closing down are stations around the Newcastle and Cessnock region, an area that is worth Billions of dollars in tourism and wine exports from the Hunter Valley. But that’s OK, “Billionaire” Barry wants to save a few bob, so it’s worth the risk, it’s not like we are expecting a hot summer or the area is prone to fires… Much.

Battling with a bushfire in the Newcastle region

Then again, I guess Barry is not a wine drinker, as he seems happy to let Coal Seam Gas exploration risk the regions income, but that’s another story.

I wrote a post about this absolute travesty of a cost cutting exercise about a week or so ago, and not much seems to have changed. Our emergency services deserve and expect better, much better. We can’t even offer them certainty or a straight answer with this failure of a government in place.

These are the bravest of the brave, and when these crews go to work they save not just property but lives also.

It is becoming ever so clear that when faced with the choice of saving a buck or saving a life, “Billionaire” Barry will take the buck every time.

These station closures are a bad idea, there is no question about it. Overtime payments in emergency services are a fact of life, I thought that that would have been obvious even to a complete and utter idiot.

Meteorlogists expect a scorching summer. By closing fire stations, Barry O’Farrell seems to be expecting snow…

Using the excuse of cutting back on overtime payments is not only incredibly lame, it is an insult to those who risk their lives daily.

The Oxford Dictionary defines the meaning of “Emergency” as

“A serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action”

The word unexpected implies that these things don’t happen to a schedule or timetable, they are “unexpected” by definition. I guess this is why we call them “emergency services” rather than “planned event services”.

Given that a Billion bucks has just been stumbled upon, I was kind of hoping that Barry might have cut these good folk some slack.

I don’t think there is any doubt they deserve it.

We all know the state budget was left in surplus when the libs took over government. There was and is no reason whatsoever to cut costs unless it’s to buy votes.

Barry needs every cent he can get his hands on to fund the bulldozers clearing paths through the west for his developer mates to build all those monuments to him… and to pay for all the paper mountains that his bureaucratic bullies create to make it look like he gives a damn about anything except money. Windsor Bridge has already cost in excess of $4.6M and they haven’t turned a sod yet.

I live near Windsor Bridge, I actually ran for one of the state seats it comes under.
During the campaign, Labor was criticised for not having built the bridge and the Liberals promised it would be under way within 6 months
18 months later, they have done nothing other than upset the locals by saying the best option is to destroy Australia’s oldest town square….
They have been nothing but an absolute failure in every aspect possible

Another great piece by WixxyLeaks highlighting NSW fire station closures.

  4. Great piece, thanks for the continued highlighting of this Govt’s failures. There’s some other interesting stuff starting to happen already. We’ve seen some firefighters forced to work overtime to be part of these station closures, which ended up costing more than the money they were trying to save that day. Tonight it appears we have spare firefighters not being used where stations are shut. It’s getting dangerous. And why? All to meet the O’Farrell budget cuts. Shame Barry, Shame. Keep up the good work Wixxy.

I’ll keep it up Darin, just as I know you won’t give up…

Plesae let us know of any protests that you have coming up so we can drum up support.

Keep up your good work mate, we need you

Barry is cutting education simply because he wants everyone to be just as dumb and useless as he is. Closing fire stations and risking innocent lives to save a few $$$ is out & out stupidity.

Thank heavens for Wixxy. God knows we get no help from the lamestream media. This is the worst NSW government since Nick Greiner.

“someone in treasury stumbled upon a Billion Dollars that Treasurer “MYOB Mike” Baird lost.”

Actually it wasn’t treasury who found it, it was the NSW auditor general (independent person). It was actually the treasurer’s own department (treasury) who “lost” it in the sense they did not check the figures coming from departments for mistakes. Maybe they didn’t have funds to get new batteries for their calculators.
