Books You Must Read Before You Die

Well, I’ve done music, documentaries, and movies, so it stands to reason that I should do a blog telling you which books I think are worth a read, and a link to tell you a little more about them…I am sorry that the links seem to have screwed up, but alas, they work ok, even if they are a bit bodgy…

I should warn you, that my tastes are rather odd, and a vastly prefer Non Fiction to Fiction, however I am still a sucker for a good yarn so I have put in a few Non Fiction tales as well, just so you don’t think I’m too boring…

So, I will start with fiction:

John Irving – A Prayer For Owen Meany

Probably my favourite all time work of fiction, Owen is one of the most complex and interesting characters ever created
Also Recommended by Irving: Setting Free The Bears. The Water Method Man
<a href="http://Setting Free the Bears (Ballantine Reader’s Circle)” title=”Setting Free Bears” target=”_blank”>
<a href="http://The Water-Method Man (Ballantine Reader’s Circle)” title=”Water Method” target=”_blank”>

Kurt Vonnegut Jr- Breakfast Of Champions

<a href="http://” title=”Breakfast” target=”_blank”>

This will have you in stitches, forget the movie, it is shit. This is a brutally hilarious look at American culture, and is still as relevant as it was when it was written. It is a short book and even has pictures, so you will read it quick. But once read, never forgotten.
Also Recommended by Vonnegut – Slaughterhouse Five, Hocus Pocus
<a href="http://Slaughterhouse-Five: A Novel” title=”Slaughterhouse 5″ target=”_blank”>
<a href="http://Hocus Pocus” title=”Hocus Pocus” target=”_blank”>

James Ellroy – American Tabloid

<a href="http://” title=”American Tabloid” target=”_blank”>

Set in the US when the Kennedy’s were in power. This is the often brutal tale of the CIA, and Secret Service agents who influence politics via cloak and dagger style missions and plots.
Also Recommended By Elroy: LA Confidential
<a href="http://L.A. Confidential” title=”LA Confidential” target=”_blank”>

Bill Drummond and Mark Manning – Bad Wisdom

<a href="http://” title=”Bad Wisdom” target=”_blank”>

I will warn you that this is an extreme book even by Caligula’s standards, so if you are squeamish or not sexually open minded, avoid it. Written by the founders of the bands The KLF, and Zodiac Mindwarp, it is the vaguely true story of their trip to the Nth Pole to erect a shrine to Elvis. It is disturbingly hilarious. You have been warned.

Okay, now some Non Fiction

Christopher Hitchens – God Is Not Great – How Religion Poisons Everything

<a href="http://” title=”God Is Not Great” target=”_blank”>

Not for the religious nutters, or maybe it is… Hitchens punches holes in every major religion big enough to drive a truck through. He also does it with all of his usual grace, intelligence, and wit. The closest thing you will find to the bible for Athiests
Also Recommended by Hitchens: Hitch 22
<a href="http://Hitch-22: A Memoir” title=”Hitch 22″ target=”_blank”>

Jane Mayer – The Dark Side

<a href="http://” title=”Dark Side” target=”_blank”>

As the title would suggest, an insight into the dark underbelly of the US war on terror and American foreign policy in general during the Bush Era.

Leigh Sales – Detainee 002

<a href="http://” title=”Detainee 002″ target=”_blank”>

This is the definitive account of David Hicks’s story, told by one of Australia’s best investigative journalists ever. Sales tells the story from all angles, including many you may have not heard before.

Noam Chomsky – Hegemony Or Survival

<a href="http://” title=”Chomsky” target=”_blank”>

The US Quest for world domination explained and dissected and studied by one of this centuries most acclaimed political writers.
Also Recommended by Chomsky: Failed States
<a href="http://Failed States: The Abuse of Power and the Assault on Democracy” title=”Failed States” target=”_blank”>

Charles Fishman – The Wal-Mart Effect

<a href="http://” title=”Wal Mart Effect” target=”_blank”>

The inner goings on of the worlds biggest retailer, their reach, impact, and influence worldwide is amazing. If you’ve ever come hope from the shops wondering why you purchased something… this will probably tell you why.

Michael Klare- Blood And Oil

<a href="http://” title=”Blood and Oil” target=”_blank”>

A scary insight into our future if we continue to rely on fossil fuels so heavily. Alos interesting to see how heavily US oil interests affect their foreign policy decisions. If you enjoyed the movie Syriana, you will like this book

    They’re showing up as HTML code.

    PS: I don’t think any of those books are quite up my alley. 😉

    I know, I was trying to link to the pages on Amazon, so people could see other peoples reviews etc, but the site doesn’t seem to like Amazon links.. bummer. Not all the books are heavy going, some are comedy. But I do have taste that can best be described as sometimes “out there”
    Cheers
